Collaboration and Competition Are Big Factors Affecting Your Contribution to Business Success

Collaboration and Competition Are Big Factors Affecting Your Contribution to Business Success

September 18, 2015
Our August Interview of the Month was based on a study published recently by CEB, which suggested that in order for today’s organizations to succeed, employees must become “enterprise contributors” who are invested in collaboratively working towards organizational success as a cohesive unit. While 75% of the employees surveyed in the CEB study expressed willingness to become enterprise contributors, they also indicated that their organizations made it difficult to contribute. These difficulties were demonstrated in collaborative, competitive, empowerment, and motivational paradoxes. The 9Lenses interview of the month dove deep to examine how these paradoxes manifest themselves in organizations. The following is a summary of our findings from that assessment. Gap Analysis Report The four paradoxes that impede employee contribution in organizations:The Competition Paradox:The organization expects greater cooperation among employees, but performance incentives such as raises and promotions also foster competition. The Empowerment Paradox:Employees need autonomy, but [...]
Getting People Analytics Right with Digital Dialogue

Getting People Analytics Right with Digital Dialogue

August 11, 2015
Big data—yes, it is that term again—is here to stay. There is a change, however, in the way big data is now being discussed. People are no longer characterizing big data as the best thing to happen to the business world, and big data no longer sits on the pedestal it once did. The business world is now gradually warming up to a new buzz term “people analytics,” which is essentially a more human subset of big data. The term is taking the corporate world, and especially the human capital management space, by storm. This powerful new category of data analytics is often touted as HR’s weapon of choice for reclaiming its seat in the boardroom. People analytics is also credited with bringing back human data to the decision-making process, as opposed to solely relying on machine data for making business decisions. In simple terms, people analytics is the [...]
Three Key Aspects of Asset-Based Consulting

Three Key Aspects of Asset-Based Consulting

May 14, 2015
We’ve discussed what asset-based consulting entails before, so I’ll just provide a quick summary. Simply put, the key aspects of asset-based consulting rely on tools and products as its primary assets rather than on human capital. These consulting tools and products can be anything from client discovery or business intelligence tools to analytics software to project management software. Previously we discussed the Seven Key Stages of a Consulting Project that are common to most consulting engagements with the client. To recap, we outlined the below phases:RFP/Bidding Entry/Onboarding Data Collection/ Discovery Analysis Recommendation Implementation Post-Implementation The nomenclature of these phases might vary across consulting firms, but in essence they are universal to the consulting industry. While the seven phases are widely discussed, there is something critical that goes on behind the scenes that may not be as evident as the seven stages of a consulting project. There are three crucial aspects to the [...]
Go Beyond Stakeholder Surveys and Traditional Interviews

Go Beyond Stakeholder Surveys and Traditional Interviews

March 11, 2015
Here’s one of the biggest challenge that business leaders and consultants face today:“How can I collect the most meaningful data from the greatest number of people?” The conventional way to gather data or insights is to conduct either surveys or face-to-face interviews. Neither of these methods, however, sufficiently addresses the challenges that these business leaders face:the difficulty of extracting meaning from the data and the time it takes to thoroughly question a large number of people through stakeholder surveys. There are also several standard survey use cases that are used to solve problems that can easily be debunked or discredited as being effective for solving problems. Likewise, there are several standard face-to-face interview use cases that can be debated. The time has come, therefore, for businesses and consultants to go beyond stakeholder surveys and manually conducted face-to-face interviews. When considering the merits of moving past ordinary stakeholder [...]
